Apple has officially launched new child safety features in its latest updates for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. These enhancements provide parents with increased control over their children's online activities, allowing for better management of websites, applications, screen time, and accessible content.
New Communication Safety Features
One of the standout improvements is the Communication Safety feature. Apple has stated that this capability now enables the blocking of images and videos that contain violent or graphic content, in addition to nudity. This protection extends to content shared during FaceTime calls, highlighting the importance of safeguarding children from harmful exposures that can occur outside of messages or stored files.
Streamlined Account Creation for Kids
Apple has also simplified the process for creating child accounts by recommending essential applications. The Request to Approve Browsing feature allows parents to require their permission before children can access new websites in Safari. This flexible control over site access is more user-friendly than completely blocking the browser, enabling children to search for information while giving parents the chance to review unfamiliar sites.
Time Allocation Recommendations
The Time Allocation feature suggests usage limits based on a child's age, covering categories such as Social Media, Entertainment, and Gaming. While these guidelines can serve as a practical starting point, it’s important for parents to adapt them to their child's unique learning needs, age, and digital habits.
Enhanced Screen Time Management
Apple has redesigned the Screen Time feature, allowing parents to view a summary of their child’s usage and adjust access with a simple tap. This summary can be a valuable tool for communication between parents and children, rather than just a means of restricting app usage. Technical controls should complement family supervision, not replace it.
Apple has indicated that the development of these features involved insights from online safety and health experts. The company collaborated with the American Academy of Pediatrics to adapt the Family Media Plan into a useful guide for parents.
The child safety features are available through the updated Screen Time in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. All devices within a Family Sharing group must be updated to compatible versions such as iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, or visionOS 27 for the Screen Time enhancements to be accessible.
This requirement may pose a challenge for families using older devices that do not support the latest operating system updates. Apple has also noted that some features may not be available in all regions, languages, or device models, and it has yet to clarify whether all new safety features will support the Indonesian language.
