New Sideloading Rules for Android Users in Indonesia

Recently, Google introduced new sideloading regulations for Android devices, which officially took effect in four countries, including Indonesia, on September 30. This move is part of a broader initiative by Google to enhance app security and user protection across its platforms.

Understanding Sideloading Regulations

The new rules stipulate that any app installed from participating app stores on devices running Android 7 or later must be registered by a verified developer. This aims to ensure that users have access to safer applications while navigating the digital space.

Participating App Stores

Currently, the official app stores included in this initiative are:

  • Google Play
  • Galaxy Store
  • Honor App Market
  • Oppo App Market
  • Xiaomi GetApps
  • Vivo V-Appstore
  • Transsion Palm Store

These platforms will serve as a safer environment for users looking to download applications, as they will be monitored for compliance with the new rules.

Installing Non-Verified Apps

While users can still download apps from non-verified developers, the process has become slightly more complicated. Users now need to navigate through additional steps, rather than simply installing apps from their web browsers as before.

Once a user opts to install an app from an unverified developer, they can choose to allow installations for either a period of seven days or indefinitely. Notably, installations via ADB (Android Debug Bridge) are exempt from this waiting period, providing developers and tech-savvy users a more flexible option.

Concerns from Users

Despite these measures aimed at improving security, some Android users have expressed concerns. Many believe that these new regulations could lead to a more closed ecosystem similar to that of iOS, thus limiting their freedom to install apps from various sources.

Currently, Indonesia, along with Brazil, Singapore, and Thailand, is the only countries required to comply with these new sideloading rules. Google has plans to expand this developer verification and sideloading system to more countries in 2027, which could reshape the way apps are downloaded and installed globally.
