Understanding Import Taxes for iPhone 18 Series from Abroad

The iPhone 18 series, including the iPhone Duo, is now available in several countries. For those eager to get their hands on these devices before they officially launch in Indonesia, purchasing them from abroad presents a viable option. However, potential buyers should be aware of additional costs associated with this process.

IMEI Registration for Imported iPhones

When bringing an iPhone purchased overseas into Indonesia, it is mandatory to register the device's IMEI to enable cellular network functionality. This registration is free of charge, but owners must also comply with customs obligations if the device's value exceeds the exemption limit.

Customs Duty Exemption and Taxation

The Indonesian Customs Office provides a duty exemption of up to USD 500 per person per arrival for personal items. If the value of the imported device exceeds USD 500, a customs duty of 10% and a Value Added Tax (VAT) of 12% apply, calculated on the value exceeding the exemption limit.

Estimated Tax Charges for iPhone Models

Based on simulations shared by Customs, here are the estimated charges for the latest iPhone models, assuming the exchange rate is IDR 17,500 per USD:

  • iPhone 18 Pro Silver 1TB: Priced at USD 1,799, after the USD 500 exemption, the taxable amount is USD 1,299 (approximately IDR 22,732,500). The customs duty amounts to IDR 2,274,000, and the VAT is IDR 2,750,715, leading to a total cost of IDR 5,024,715.
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max Silver 1TB: With a price of USD 1,899, the taxable amount after exemption is USD 1,399 (around IDR 24,482,500). The customs duty is IDR 2,449,000 and the VAT is IDR 2,961,465, resulting in a total payment of IDR 5,411,465.
  • iPhone Duo Night Sky 1TB: This foldable device, priced at USD 2,599, has a taxable value of USD 2,099 (approximately IDR 36,752,500) after the exemption. The customs duty for this model is IDR 3,674,000, while the VAT totals IDR 4,444,715, culminating in a total duty of IDR 8,118,715.

Important Customs Procedures

It is crucial to note that the USD 500 exemption applies to all personal items carried by a passenger, not just a single mobile phone. Passengers are required to declare the mobile device they are bringing through the All Indonesia system, proceed with IMEI registration, and fulfill customs duties at the Customs Office located in the arrival terminal.

Customs has indicated that registration can also be completed via its official website or the Mobile Beacukai app. To facilitate the process, travelers should prepare documents such as their passport, boarding pass, any available invoices, and the device intended for registration.

Lastly, it is vital not to overlook the arrival process. Although registration can still be completed within 60 days of entering the country, the USD 500 exemption will no longer apply after exiting the terminal.
