Apple recently introduced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable phone, but not everyone is impressed. Carl Pei, the CEO of Nothing, has voiced significant criticism regarding the device's pricing and features.
High Price for Limited Features
In a video posted on Instagram and YouTube, Pei expressed his concerns about the iPhone Duo's hefty price of USD 2,000 (approximately IDR 35.7 million). He described this cost as a waste of money, especially considering the phone offers limited features compared to other models.
Comparisons to iPhone Pro
Pei highlighted that the iPhone Duo is priced higher than the iPhone Pro, despite having fewer features. He stated, "At USD 2,000, it’s more expensive than the iPhone Pro, yet it lacks several capabilities." This comparison raises questions about the value of the new device.
Missing Essential Features
Among the drawbacks pointed out by Pei are the absence of a telephoto camera and a lower-quality internal selfie camera. He noted that the iPhone Duo does not support Face ID, which is a significant feature for many users. The design constraints of the iPhone Duo, which measures only 5.2mm thick when opened, likely contribute to the omission of these features.
Future Improvements Expected
It appears that Apple is aware of these limitations. According to reliable sources, the company is reportedly prioritizing the inclusion of Face ID and a telephoto camera for future iterations of the iPhone Duo. These features are expected to be introduced in the next generation of the device.
Pei also noted that much of the online praise for the iPhone Duo focuses on its animations when opening the device. He remarked that this can easily be replicated, as evidenced by the quick development of similar animations for devices like the Galaxy Z Fold 8 shortly after the iPhone Duo's unveiling.
This isn’t Pei’s first critique of foldable phones. In 2023, he argued that foldable devices are a product category forced upon consumers by manufacturers. His recent comments further emphasize his stance on the perceived shortcomings of such technology.
