This feature continued through subsequent models, including the Galaxy Z Fold4, Z Fold5, and Z Fold6. However, Samsung opted to revert to a conventional front camera with the Galaxy Z Fold7, prioritizing camera quality and device thickness.
Why Samsung Shifted Away from UDC
Ilham Indrawan, Senior Manager of MX Product Marketing at Samsung Electronics Indonesia, explained that the shift was a strategic decision. He emphasized that the quality of the camera is paramount, stating that under-display cameras require additional screen layers, which can make devices bulkier. By returning to traditional cameras, Samsung can utilize larger sensors, significantly improving video call quality.
Impacts on User Experience
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold3 was notable for being the first foldable device to use an under-display camera, boasting a 4 MP resolution with an f/1.8 aperture. This innovation aimed to minimize visual distractions during video playback and gaming. However, despite its advancements, Samsung acknowledges that the image quality of under-display cameras may not match that of traditional cameras. For clearer selfies, users are encouraged to utilize the front-facing camera on the cover screen or the rear camera.
