In the world of to-do list applications for Android, the choices are plentiful. From simple apps like TickTick to complex platforms such as Notion, users have a wide array of options available. Personally, I've explored many of these apps over the years, but for the past few years, I've settled on Google Tasks for managing my to-do lists.
The Appeal of Simplicity
One of the biggest draws of Google Tasks is its straightforward design. The app focuses on the essentials without overwhelming users with unnecessary features. This simplicity is a perfect match for my style, allowing me to categorize tasks into sections, set reminders, and even create sub-tasks when necessary. While it may not have cutting-edge features, it meets my fundamental needs effectively.
Missing Features and Frustrations
However, despite my appreciation for its simplicity, there are significant gaps in Google Tasks that can be quite frustrating. For instance, one major limitation is the inability to share tasks or lists with others. I recently wanted to share a weekend to-do list with a partner, only to discover that Google Tasks restricts sharing to individual accounts.
Another notable absence is location-based reminders. It’s frustrating not being able to set reminders that trigger when I arrive at a specific location, like reminding me of groceries when I’m near the store. Given that Google already has access to my location data via my Android device, this feature feels like a missed opportunity.
Improvements Needed
There are also other areas where improvements could enhance the user experience. Better filtering options would be beneficial, allowing users to view tasks due today at a glance. An inbox feature, similar to that in TickTick, would also be useful, providing a clearer view of tasks due soon. Although Google Tasks integrates with Google Calendar, a dedicated UI in the app to showcase upcoming tasks without other calendar events would be advantageous.
The Key Feature That Keeps Me
So why do I stick with Google Tasks despite these shortcomings? The answer lies in its integration with the Google Nest Hub. I have a first-generation Nest Hub on my desk that not only serves as a smart home control center and photo display but also keeps me on track with my tasks. Any due items from Google Tasks show up on the Nest Hub's home screen, acting like virtual sticky notes. This visibility is a game-changer, as it ensures that I don’t overlook any important reminders.
Moreover, the ability to see my tasks on a smart display feels more intentional than just receiving notifications on my phone. The visual cue often prompts me to take action, making it easier to stay focused on my responsibilities. Additionally, I can easily access my tasks through the Nest Hub by asking Gemini to list my reminders, which eliminates the need to pick up my phone and potentially get sidetracked.
This unique integration is something I cannot find in other to-do list apps like TickTick or Microsoft To Do, making it a compelling reason for me to continue using Google Tasks. While it may lack several features I desire, the functionality provided by the Nest Hub is so beneficial that I’m willing to overlook its limitations.
Ultimately, Google Tasks fulfills a specific need for me, and its integration with smart home technology has become an indispensable part of my daily routine. As much as I wish for additional features, the current setup works so well that I don’t foresee a change in my to-do list app anytime soon.
