The Pixel 11 Pro XL has made waves in the smartphone world, but its wireless charging capabilities have left some users disappointed. Recently, I put the PixelSnap charger to the test to see how it compares to previous models and whether it lives up to Google’s claims of 25W charging.

Initial Impressions of PixelSnap

While the Pixel 11 Pro XL is a standout device in many respects, charging speed remains a sore point. Though Google has introduced the PixelSnap charger, priced at $39.99, the experience has not improved as much as one would hope. Despite the potential for faster charging, the reality is that the performance is still lagging.

Charging Speed Analysis

During my testing, the PixelSnap charger struggled to reach its advertised peak of 25W. In fact, it only managed to hit 23W at its best, which is significantly lower than the 31W I achieved with the Pixel 10 Pro XL. The initial charging phase was particularly frustrating, taking nearly six minutes just to stabilize at peak power. This slow start makes quick top-ups less feasible for users in a hurry.

Comparing Performance with Previous Models

On a brighter note, the Pixel 11 Pro XL does show some improvement over its predecessor. While the Pixel 10 Pro XL would drop to around 10W quite quickly, the newer model manages to maintain a more consistent output, hovering around 15W for a longer duration. This has resulted in a full charge taking 119 minutes, a notable improvement from last year’s 145 minutes. Additionally, reaching 50% battery now takes 47 minutes instead of 61.

Temperature Concerns

However, these advancements come with a downside. The temperatures during wireless charging are noticeably higher, causing the device to feel warm to the touch. The average temperature peaked at 37.4°C, which is slightly above last year’s model. This heat can lead to throttling, limiting the charging speed after the initial surge. Ultimately, the PixelSnap remains slower than even basic wired chargers.

Legacy of the Pixel Stand

It’s a shame that Google has shifted away from the Pixel Stand, which previously provided a more efficient wireless charging solution. The Pixel 9 Pro XL, for instance, could fully charge in just 101 minutes with the old stand. In contrast, using the Pixel Stand with the Pixel 11 Pro XL caps the power at merely 7.5W, extending charging times well beyond four hours.

Wired Charging Capabilities

Switching gears to wired charging, the Pixel 11 Pro XL promises up to 45W. However, the actual peak output is closer to 41W, contingent on having a compatible charger. Google’s new Extreme Charging mode offers a brief boost, but it also raises the device's temperature, which can be concerning for users prioritizing safety.

Looking Forward

With the flaws of the PixelSnap and the limitations of the Pixel Stand, many are left hoping for improvements in the next generation of Google accessories. A new model with better alignment and cooling features could significantly enhance the charging experience. Until then, users may find themselves frustrated with the current offerings.
