AirPods Users Shocked to Discover Hidden Charging Cable Inside Box

A recent post on Threads has sparked widespread discussion among Apple users. The reason is simple yet astonishing: many are just now realizing that older generations of AirPods were sold with a charging cable included in the box.

The viral post featured a user showcasing the contents of their long-stored AirPods box. Upon opening the compartment at the bottom of the packaging, they discovered the unused charging cable that had been hidden away all these years.

This revelation quickly led to a flurry of reactions online, with numerous users sharing similar experiences. Many were taken aback to learn that the charging cable had been tucked away in the box, left untouched for years.

Surprised Reactions from Users

One user expressed their shock, saying, "I’ve been using AirPods 3 with a Lightning connector while my iPhone switched to USB-C. I was so confused about whether to upgrade or buy a cable, but it turns out I had it all along!" Another chimed in, stating, "I can't believe I just checked my AirPods box after two years of using the Pro model and found the cable!"

Others shared similar sentiments, with comments like, "I just found out after seven years! I have no idea where my AirPods are now, though!" The excitement was palpable as users shared their discoveries.

A Long-Standing Feature of AirPods

This phenomenon isn’t entirely new. Since the launch of the first-generation AirPods in 2016, Apple has consistently included a charging cable in the sales package. However, the power adapter was not included, requiring users to either utilize a USB adapter they already owned or purchase one separately.

The type of cable included has evolved alongside the product. Older AirPods came with a Lightning cable, while newer models that utilize USB-C transitioned to using a USB-C cable instead.

Why Users Forgot About the Cable

Many users likely overlooked the cable because it was stored in a hidden compartment at the bottom of the box. Additionally, following Apple's decision to remove the charging adapters from iPhone packaging to reduce electronic waste, some users assumed that AirPods also did not come with a cable from the start.

Changes in AirPods Packaging

Starting in September 2024, Apple began removing the included USB-C charging cable from the AirPods package, beginning with the release of AirPods 4. This policy continued into September 2025 with the launch of AirPods Pro 3, which, like the AirPods 4, was sold without a charging cable included.

Currently, the following AirPods models no longer come with a charging cable in their packaging:

  • AirPods 4
  • AirPods Pro 3

On its official specifications page, Apple notes, "USB-C Charge Cable sold separately," indicating that users will need to purchase the USB-C cable separately if required. However, users still have various options for charging their devices. Both AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 support wireless charging through Qi-standard chargers, MagSafe, or Apple Watch chargers, depending on the model.
