Google Introduces Android Halo: An Innovative Feature for AI Communication
In a recent talk, Google revealed more details about Android Halo, a feature designed to increase transparency of AI agents on Android devices. Sameer Samat, President of Android at Google, explained that Android Halo will have a dedicated space in the status bar where AI agents can communicate with users while performing background tasks.
Seamless Communication
“This is a special location in the status bar where your chosen agent, such as Gemini or others, can notify you and receive input from you about the tasks you are working on,” Samat explained. This feature aims to facilitate interaction between users and AI agents without interrupting ongoing activities. In this way, users can continue their work while still receiving important information from the AI agents.
Samat added that as AI agents become increasingly capable of handling various tasks independently, they will occasionally need to ask follow-up questions, provide progress updates, or present results achieved. “So, these agents working in the background will want to ask questions or give updates or show results... so you can keep track of their progress there,” Samat said.
A Paradigm Shift in the Operating System
At the Google I/O event held in May, Google first introduced the concept of Android Halo. At that time, they provided only limited details about how this feature works, including a video clip showing a subtle status indicator at the top of the screen when Gemini is active. The goal is to ensure users remain aware of what their AI assistant is doing without disrupting ongoing activities on their phone.
Furthermore, Samat explained that Android is transitioning from being just an operating system to an intelligent system, where users simply express what they want and the system manages the context and actions. “We think this is an exciting new place for how computing can evolve, and the operating system makes it smoother for you to engage with things running in the background,” Samat said.
Isolated Environment for AI Agents
In his interview, Samat also discussed the virtual window system in Android designed specifically for AI agents. If Gemini starts a task, it will do so in an isolated environment where the app you choose and Gemini can coexist in a single window that can be minimized to the status bar, known as Halo. Samat explained that the AI agent cannot leave this container, so it cannot use other apps.

At the end of the interview, Samat demonstrated another experimental feature of Gemini, showing how this AI assistant can use a car’s front camera to answer questions about the world outside the vehicle. This feature highlights the tremendous potential of AI integration in our daily lives, providing greater convenience and better information.
