In the poll, which gathered responses from 1,455 participants, the question posed was straightforward: How important is long software support in your decision to buy a new phone? Respondents were given three options: “Yes, it’s a top priority;” “Somewhat, but not a dealbreaker;” or “No, I care more about price.” The results were telling, with nearly 84% indicating that long software support holds significant weight in their purchasing decisions.
Top Priority for Many
Approximately 46% of the respondents categorized long software support as a top priority when selecting a smartphone. This finding suggests that even if individuals do not plan to use their devices for lengthy periods—such as seven years—having extended software support enhances the device's resale value. This aspect can ultimately lead to better financial returns when upgrading to a newer model.
Balancing Priorities
In addition to those who view long software support as essential, around 38% of respondents acknowledged its importance, albeit without it being a dealbreaker if the device possesses other appealing features. Conversely, only about one in six participants stated that software support is irrelevant as long as the price is competitive.
