Google TV Projectors: A Smart Solution for Viewing Experience
Since I first tried the portable XGIMI MoGo Pro projector in 2019, I immediately fell in love. This device is not just an accessory for home streaming experiences, but more like a portable TV that I can take to the balcony or bedroom without having to carry a large television. Over time, I have used Android TV and Google TV projectors in various capacities, from the kitchen to the outdoor terrace. My latest projector even replaced the Samsung Frame TV Pro after its screen died, and I realized something interesting: maybe my next TV purchase won’t be a TV at all, but a sophisticated ultra-short-throw Google TV projector.
Advantages of Projectors Compared to Conventional TVs
After moving to a new house, I was looking for a TV that not only serves as entertainment but also does not disrupt the room’s aesthetics. I was interested in the Samsung Frame TV and some of its competitors like Hisense and TCL. However, after Samsung launched the Frame Pro with a brighter and higher contrast Neo QLED panel, I felt it was the right choice. Unfortunately, after spending a lot to hide the TV on the wall, I often had to disable the frame feature due to Samsung’s unsatisfactory software. At that point, I looked back at projectors as an alternative.
Projectors, especially ultra-short-throw models, offer visual freedom that traditional TVs cannot provide. I can place the projector on a media console without sacrificing wall space, and even add paintings or bookshelves around it. With a projector, I can have a white screen that can be lowered as needed, giving me extraordinary visual flexibility.
Mobility and Installation Ease of Projectors
I have enjoyed the freedom of taking my TV anywhere. The Google TV projectors I use are usually portable models with internal batteries, making it easy to move from the first floor to the second without hassle. From watching YouTube videos on a white cabinet on the ground floor, to mirroring my Pixel 10 Pro screen on the office wall, to watching movies on the bedroom ceiling upstairs, all can be done without worrying about cables or extra speakers. Everything is in one unit.
More affordable projectors, like the XGIMI Vibe One I currently use, are ideal for temporary use, whether in a guest room, office, or outdoor movie night. However, once I tried an ultra-short-throw projector, I realized that these projectors can also function as a "serious TV" that is much easier to move compared to a 65-inch or larger panel.
Flexibility and Image Quality of Projectors
In terms of installation, projectors are much simpler. There are no large holes to drill like when installing the Samsung Frame Pro, and no worries about visible power cables. When my Frame Pro panel died, I even had to remove the TV from the wall to start a repair request, which was certainly very inconvenient. Projectors, on the other hand, only require one power cable and are easy to move for maintenance.
One of the main advantages of projectors is the flexibility in image size. With a projector, I can adjust the distance to get a 73-inch projection without adding burden to my setup. Additionally, the same projector can be used to project up to 100 inches or more on different walls or ceilings. This is a convenience no TV can offer.
Smooth Streaming Experience with Google TV
With fewer TV manufacturers supporting Google TV, it is interesting to see the platform remain popular among projectors. Brands like XGIMI, TCL, Dangbei, and Epson offer excellent projectors with built-in Google TV. All my apps and services, including YouTube, Plex, Apple TV, and Amazon Prime Video, are easily accessible. I can also use the Google Home app to turn on the projector or control it with the on-screen remote.
Although switching from a TV to a projector is not an easy decision, there are some drawbacks to consider, such as dealing with ambient light and potentially lower image quality. However, many of the latest ultra-short-throw projectors have addressed many of these issues, and I am confident new models will continue to improve. So, when it’s time to buy a new TV, I won’t be looking for a regular TV but will consider a projector as a more practical and enjoyable solution.
