Sony has made a reassuring announcement amidst the global tech industry's struggles with rising memory chip prices. While companies like Apple and Samsung face challenges from the increasing costs driven by the artificial intelligence trend, Sony has confirmed that their supply of memory chips is stable.
This assurance regarding their supply chain allows Sony to sidestep the production cost pressures currently affecting the tech industry, providing a crucial advantage for the company as it continues to ramp up its hardware production, particularly for the PS5 console.
Stable Supply and Financial Growth
In its latest earnings report, Sony addressed market concerns by stating that they have secured a sufficient supply of components for the current fiscal year.
"We have locked in the necessary memory quantities to meet our sales projections for fiscal year 2026. Our plans remain unchanged, and the profitability of our hardware for fiscal year 2026 will be comparable to fiscal year 2025," a Sony representative stated in an official release.
Impact on Financial Performance
Sony's success in securing RAM at manageable prices has positively impacted its financial performance. In the first quarter (April to June), the group's operating profit surged by 40%, reaching 476.5 billion yen, significantly bolstered by its gaming and imaging sensor businesses.
Thanks to cost efficiencies and favorable factors such as the return of U.S. tax rates and advantageous exchange rates, Sony has even raised its full-year operating profit target by 8% to 1.72 trillion yen (approximately USD 10.70 billion).
Importance of Hardware Supply
Having a stable supply of hardware is now critical for Sony, especially with a series of major game launches on the horizon. Despite PS5 shipments dropping to 1.6 million units in the first quarter, analysts predict that demand will surge again by the end of the year.
Upcoming Game Releases
Sony is expected to benefit significantly from the upcoming launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) on November 19. Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls estimates that this game could sell between 30 million and 35 million copies by the year's end. Additionally, the PS5 lineup will be strengthened by the exclusive title God of War Laufey, set for release in February.
Beyond gaming, Sony's dominance in the imaging sensor sector continues to grow. Recently, the company has been reported to be pursuing the acquisition of Tamron, a renowned lens manufacturer that supplies products for both Sony and competitors like Nikon and Canon.
