Apple Intelligence Launching in China Without Siri AI Features

Apple's much-anticipated artificial intelligence feature, known as Apple Intelligence, was first introduced with iOS 18 in 2024. However, its rollout faced significant challenges in specific regions, particularly in the European Union and China. Recent reports suggest that Apple is finally making headway in launching its AI capabilities in China with an upcoming software update.

Upcoming iOS Update for China

The latest version, iOS 27.3, is expected to debut in December 2026, bringing Apple Intelligence to the Chinese market. While users in Western regions have access to Google’s Gemini AI, Apple has opted to collaborate with local tech giant Alibaba for its AI needs in China. This partnership will utilize Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models to power various features of the system.

Understanding the AI Models

  • Qwen: This is a general AI model that is expected to drive most functionalities within the Apple Intelligence framework. Its capabilities are anticipated to enhance user experience significantly.
  • Tongyi Wanxiang: This model specializes in image and video generation, which will facilitate tasks like image editing. However, certain functionalities will be limited due to regulatory constraints.

Limitations on Features

Despite the introduction of Apple Intelligence, it appears that the feature set available in China will be somewhat restricted compared to what users in the United States can enjoy. Notably, Siri AI will be absent from the iOS 27.3 update. The limitations stem not from technological challenges but rather from the complexities of local regulations that govern AI applications.

In addition, the text generation capabilities will be confined to specific applications, further reflecting the regulatory landscape that Apple must navigate in China. This pattern of limited AI functionality is not unique to China; similar restrictions apply in the EU as well.

Siri AI's Availability in Other Regions

Interestingly, Siri AI is also not accessible in the EU on devices such as iPhones, iPads, or Apple Watches. According to a statement from Apple regarding the September update for Siri AI and Apple Intelligence, Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will have access to Siri AI, but only when the device is set to a supported language. Overall, Siri AI is not available initially across various platforms in the EU.

Mark Gurman from Bloomberg has indicated that users in both China and the EU should not anticipate the arrival of Siri AI anytime soon, leaving many to question the future of AI integration in these regions.

As Apple continues to navigate these challenges, it remains to be seen how effectively Apple Intelligence will be adapted to meet the local needs of Chinese users while conforming to existing regulations.
