Apple's First Foldable Smartphone
Apple has officially introduced its first foldable smartphone, named the iPhone Duo. Contrary to earlier speculations claiming it would be dubbed the iPhone Fold or iPhone Ultra, the iPhone Duo marks a significant evolution in Apple's smartphone offerings.
Design and Display Innovations
During the launch event, CEO John Ternus emphasized that the iPhone Duo is designed to serve as a central hub for users' digital lives. The device features a larger display that enhances content consumption, AI interactions with Siri, and gaming experiences. Ternus highlighted the importance of maintaining pocketability and comfort in hand, which led to the decision to implement a foldable design.
He criticized existing foldable phones, suggesting they often feel like two awkwardly joined devices. The iPhone Duo, when closed, resembles a passport in shape, representing the most significant design change since the first iPhone.
The device boasts a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display, covering 90% of the display area found on the iPhone 18 Pro. When unfolded, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, which is claimed to be 50% larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Both displays share the same aspect ratio and support advanced features like ProMotion, Always-On Display, and peak brightness of up to 3,000 nits.
Durability and Functionality
The inner display utilizes a nano-texture coating designed to minimize reflections and conceal crease marks. While Apple has not claimed that the crease is entirely invisible, its effectiveness will be evaluated by users in real-world scenarios. The iPhone Duo is constructed with a titanium grade 5 frame and features a hinge composed of over 100 components, claimed to enhance durability.
Additionally, the device carries an IP68 rating, indicating it can withstand submersion in water up to six meters for 30 minutes. This level of durability offers peace of mind to users in various environments.
iOS Optimizations and Camera Features
Running on iOS 27.1, the iPhone Duo has been optimized for its foldable design. Features such as Dock, app navigation, and Dynamic Island have been relocated to the side of the screen to maximize vertical space. Users can now utilize Split View to operate two applications concurrently, a first for the iPhone.
The iPhone Duo also features a comprehensive camera system, including a 48 MP main camera with optical zoom and sensor-shift stabilization, and a 48 MP ultra-wide camera suitable for macro photography. The exterior display allows users to preview their camera shots, while AI-driven features like Smart Take can automatically capture images when subjects are ready.
Performance and Battery Life
Powered by the A20 Pro chip built on 2nm technology, the iPhone Duo offers a performance boost of 35% compared to the iPhone 17 Pro. The device includes a battery on each side, enabling video playback for up to 31 hours on the inner display and 44 hours on the outer display.
Wired charging can reach 50% in approximately 20 minutes, while wireless charging via MagSafe or Qi2 takes about 30 minutes. The iPhone Duo exclusively supports eSIM, allowing more room for the battery, though this may pose challenges in regions where eSIM adoption is not widespread.
With a starting price of USD 1,999 (around IDR 35 million), the iPhone Duo comes in storage options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB, available in Star White and Night Sky colors. Pre-orders will commence in over 70 countries on October 16, 2026, with sales starting on October 23.
