Google is continuously enhancing the integration of its Gemini app into daily Android tasks. Recently, an APK teardown of the Google Gemini app (version 1.0.95) unveiled a promising new feature that aims to streamline the process of remembering details from screenshots.
Current Functionality of Gemini
At present, when users share an image or file via the Android share sheet, the Gemini app opens with the media attached. This requires users to manually enter questions or requests for image edits, which can be time-consuming. However, the anticipated update suggests a smarter, one-tap shortcut that could significantly improve user interaction with the app.
New One-Tap Shortcut
The upcoming feature is expected to build on the existing sharing functionality. When users tap the dropdown arrow next to the Gemini icon, a new option labeled “Remember this with Gemini” will appear, specifically for images. This feature does not extend to other file types such as PDFs or documents.
Upon selecting this option, the Gemini interface will launch with the shared image already attached. The text box will be pre-filled with the phrase “@Remember this image.” Users can then simply hit send, allowing Gemini to analyze the image and extract key details worth remembering, eliminating the need for any additional typing.
Testing the New Feature
In preliminary tests, users shared a screenshot of a boarding pass using the new one-tap shortcut. Gemini successfully captured essential information, including the airline name, flight number, route, passenger name, travel date, and seat assignment. Later, in a separate conversation, users were able to ask Gemini about the flight details, and it accurately recalled all the information, demonstrating the feature’s potential effectiveness.
Impact on User Experience
This new method represents a significant reduction in the steps required to save information with Gemini. Instead of going through the process of opening the app, attaching an image, and typing a request, users will be able to complete the task with just two taps from their current app. This change is expected to enhance the overall user experience.
Moreover, this feature may connect to Gemini’s existing memory and personalization settings, which are likely necessary for the shortcut to function. It aligns with Google’s broader initiative towards Personal Intelligence, which aims to enhance user interactions across various Google applications and devices, similar to the Magic Cue feature available on Pixel phones.
Availability of the Feature
Currently, the “Remember this with Gemini” shortcut is not available to regular users, and Google has yet to announce a timeline for its rollout. However, early tests indicate that it could be a valuable addition to the Gemini app, significantly improving the user experience once it becomes widely available.
As Google continues to innovate, users can look forward to enhancements that simplify their interactions with technology.
