Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable device, during a highly anticipated launch event. The new smartphone, which boasts an innovative foldable design similar to that of a book, has generated excitement, but also a fair share of skepticism from industry analysts.
Launch Details and Features
John Ternus, who recently took over as Apple CEO following Tim Cook's departure, showcased the iPhone Duo, marking it as the largest model in the iPhone lineup to date. Priced between $1,999 (approximately Rp 35 million) and $3,200 (around Rp 56 million), the iPhone Duo stands out as Apple's most expensive smartphone yet. According to Ternus, the device draws inspiration from the iPad, offering a compact experience when unfolded, while resembling a wider iPhone when closed.
Design Philosophy
During the launch, Ternus emphasized Apple's intention to differentiate the iPhone Duo from other foldable smartphones available in the market, which he believes often feel like two phones glued together. He played a direct role in the device's development, leveraging his extensive experience as a senior executive in Apple's hardware division before succeeding Cook earlier this year.
Analysts Weigh In
Ben Wood, head analyst at FDM CCS Insight, suggested that Ternus's promotion was strategically timed to coincide with one of Apple's most significant product launches. He remarked, "Nothing happens by chance at Apple." Meanwhile, some analysts expressed concerns regarding the iPhone Duo's potential to truly innovate and drive substantial growth for the company.
Concerns Over Market Reception
Dipanjan Chatterjee, an analyst at Forrester, warned that the foldable phone might simply serve as a premium adornment in Apple's product portfolio, enhancing brand prestige without fostering meaningful sales growth. He pointed to the device's steep pricing as a major factor that could hinder its success.
Chatterjee also drew parallels with Apple's Vision Pro headset, which was priced at $3,699 but failed to capture significant consumer interest. Alternatively, he speculated that the iPhone Duo may find its place akin to the Apple Watch, which, while not as popular as the iPhone, still enjoys a solid consumer base.
Another challenge Apple faces is the established user habits surrounding the traditional iPhone interface, which may complicate the transition to a new foldable design. Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at Creative Strategies, highlighted that while foldable phones are intriguing, the necessary software adjustments and the adaptation process for users switching from conventional smartphones could pose significant hurdles.
As the tech world watches, it remains to be seen how the iPhone Duo will fare in a competitive market filled with skepticism and high expectations.
