Experience Using the Google Pixel 10 After 10 Months
Since the arrival of the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL in my hands ten months ago, this phone has become a loyal companion. It not only functions as a communication tool but also as my main camera. I have captured more than 4,000 photos and videos with this device. However, there is one camera feature that still confuses me to this day, which is Auto Best Take.
The Promising Auto Best Take Feature
This feature is a more advanced and automatic version of Best Take introduced on the Pixel 8. With Auto Best Take, users should be able to take several group photos and automatically receive suggestions for the best image where everyone is smiling and looks good. The goal of this feature is to simplify the photo editing process, so users no longer need to manually select faces.
Challenges in Using Auto Best Take
Although this feature sounds promising, I encountered many difficulties when trying it. Until a few weeks ago, Google did not provide a clear explanation of how Auto Best Take works or how to activate it. The official support page only mentioned that the Top Shot setting must be enabled. I have tried for months to get a single Auto Top Shot photo during holidays and gatherings with friends, but the result was zero.
Recently, an update to the Pixel Camera app added a separate toggle to enable Auto Best Take. I hoped this would solve the problem I faced, but it did not. Even though I enabled the new setting and ensured Top Shot was active, I still only got the photos I took without the expected automatic results.
Confusing Photo Results
Often, I only get the two photos I took. On rare occasions, I get a third photo that I remember not taking, unless my finger accidentally touched the shutter button a third time. I suspect this photo might be a combined result of Auto Best Take, but many signs seem to contradict that.
I discussed this with colleagues at Android Authority to find out if they experienced the same, but none have successfully gotten an automatic Best Take photo since using the Pixel 10. This is quite a clear warning sign. I also contacted Google to ask about Auto Best Take and how to activate it, but so far there has been no response.
