Amid the challenges faced by tech giants like Apple and Samsung due to rising memory chip prices driven by the AI trend, Sony has announced reassuring news. The Japanese company has confirmed that its supply of memory chips is secure.
This stability in the supply chain allows Sony to avoid the rising production costs affecting the global tech industry. It's a crucial advantage for the company as it continues to ramp up hardware production, particularly for the PS5 console.
Strong Supply Chain Management
In its latest earnings report, Sony addressed market concerns by stating that it has locked in sufficient component supplies for the current fiscal year. A representative from Sony stated, “We have secured the necessary memory quantities to meet our sales volume projections for fiscal year 2026. Our hardware profitability plans remain unchanged, staying similar to fiscal year 2025.”
Financial Performance Boost
Sony's success in securing a stable supply of RAM at manageable prices has positively impacted the company's financial performance. In the first quarter (April to June), the group's operating profit surged by 40%, reaching 476.5 billion yen, significantly supported by its gaming and imaging sensor businesses.
Thanks to cost efficiencies and favorable factors such as the return of U.S. tax rates and advantageous exchange rates, Sony has confidently raised its full-year operating profit target by 8% to 1.72 trillion yen (approximately USD 10.7 billion).
Impending Game Releases
The availability of stable hardware supplies is now critical for Sony, especially with major game launches on the horizon. Although PS5 shipments dropped to 1.6 million units in the first quarter, analysts predict that demand will explode by year-end.
Particularly, Sony is expected to benefit from the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) on November 19. Ampere Analysis analyst Piers Harding-Rolls estimates that the game could sell between 30 million and 35 million copies by the end of the year. Additionally, the PS5 lineup will be bolstered by the exclusive title God of War: Laufey, set to release in February.
Expansion Beyond Gaming
Outside the gaming sector, Sony's dominance in the imaging sensor market continues to grow. Recently, reports surfaced that the company is seeking to acquire Tamron, a renowned lens manufacturer that supplies products to Sony as well as competitors like Nikon and Canon. This move reflects Sony's commitment to strengthening its position in the imaging industry.
