How Gen Z Approaches Job Searching and Career Advice

In recent years, LinkedIn has been the go-to platform for job seekers and professional networking. However, new trends indicate that this is changing, especially among Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012.

Shift in Career Search Platforms

According to a recent study titled "Gen Z Misinfluence Report" by Zety, a U.S.-based resume-building company, Generation Z is moving away from LinkedIn as their primary source for job hunting and career advice. Instead, they are turning to platforms like YouTube and Instagram.

Survey Insights

The survey conducted by Zety involved 919 Gen Z workers aged 18 to 27 who are currently employed in the United States. The findings, released on February 23, 2026, revealed that every participant, 100% of them, utilizes social media to seek career advice.

Trust in Social Media Influencers

Remarkably, 45% of those surveyed expressed greater trust in career advice from social media creators and influencers compared to traditional sources such as career advisors or recruiters. This shift raises questions about the credibility of conventional career guidance methods.

Declining Popularity of LinkedIn

Interestingly, LinkedIn, which is expected to be a key player in career-related activities, has fallen to the bottom of the list when it comes to platforms used for career advice. It is significantly overshadowed by YouTube and Instagram.

Many Gen Z individuals have even coined the term "ick" to describe their discomfort with LinkedIn. This term, which has gained traction on social media, reflects their aversion to the platform. Users feel that LinkedIn is increasingly filled with AI-generated content, subtle bragging, and an overall impression that everyone on the platform is achieving greater career success than they are.

Instagram's Expanding Role

This dissatisfaction with LinkedIn has led Gen Z to explore other platforms for career advice and job opportunities. Notably, Instagram has not only replaced LinkedIn's role but has taken on multiple functions. It has become a versatile platform for networking, showcasing portfolios, and even job searching.

As the landscape of job searching continues to evolve, it is evident that Generation Z is redefining how career advice is sought and shared. Their preferences highlight the importance of authenticity and relatability in the advice they choose to follow.
