Overview of Recent Trends
A recent report from Omdia highlights a significant decline in smartphone shipments in India, revealing a 26% drop to 35.8 million units in the third quarter of 2026. This marks the lowest shipment levels since 2016, despite the onset of the festive season, which typically boosts sales. The primary factors driving this downturn are increased prices and a general hesitancy among consumers to spend.
Market Leaders and Their Performance
In a surprising turn, Samsung reclaimed its position as the market leader, shipping 6.7 million units, which accounts for nearly 19% of the market share. This resurgence is attributed to the popularity of models like the Galaxy A07, Galaxy A17, and Galaxy A27, alongside the new Galaxy S26 series and foldable devices.
Challenges for Competitors
Vivo experienced the sharpest decline among the top five manufacturers, with shipments dropping to 6.4 million units—a 34% decrease from the previous year. This decline can be linked to repeated price increases that disrupted inventory planning and diminished the availability of entry-level devices. The Y11 5G and Y21 5G were among the few models that helped sustain its sales.
Oppo, securing the third spot, also faced challenges with a 24% decrease in shipments to 4.9 million units. Rising prices and cautious inventory management affected its popular A-series, although the premium Reno16 series provided some support.
Xiaomi and Apple’s Performance
Xiaomi followed closely in fourth place, shipping 4.7 million units—a 28% decrease year-on-year. The increasing costs of components have undermined its traditional value proposition, although models like the Redmi 15A and Redmi A7 helped maintain sales. Meanwhile, Apple rounded out the top five with 3.9 million units sold, buoyed by strategic channel stocking in anticipation of price hikes and strong demand for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16.
Market Outlook and Consumer Insights
According to Omdia's projections, the Indian smartphone market may see a further low-single-digit percentage decline in 2027, with pricing pressures likely continuing into the first half of the year. Interestingly, nearly 40% of consumers in India indicated that valuable AI capabilities could encourage them to pay more for a smartphone, suggesting potential areas for future innovation and marketing efforts.
