New Wi-Fi Router Technology Can Detect Movement Without Cameras

Imagine a Wi-Fi router in your home that can recognize movement within a room without the need for cameras or additional sensors, relying solely on existing internet signals. This innovative technology is now being rolled out by Comcast, the largest internet service provider in the United States, to millions of its customers.

Introducing WiFi Motion

Comcast, which serves over 30 million residential internet users in the U.S. under its Xfinity brand, has launched a feature called WiFi Motion as part of its new home security package, Xfinity Shield. This feature capitalizes on the radio waves that the router typically emits. When a person moves through a room, their body slightly disrupts the Wi-Fi signal traveling between the router and connected devices.

How It Works

The system analyzes the changes in the Wi-Fi signal to detect movement and sends notifications to users’ smartphones via the Xfinity app. Notably, this feature does not record video, take photos, or identify who is moving. Furthermore, users must opt-in to activate WiFi Motion through the Xfinity app, as it is not enabled by default.

Background on Motion Detection Technology

This technology is not entirely new; researchers have long demonstrated that Wi-Fi signals can be used to detect human movement. In various experiments, similar technologies have even successfully distinguished between individuals based on how their bodies affect radio signals. Other companies, such as Linksys, Wiz, and Philips Hue, have also developed motion detection services using Wi-Fi signals.

Limitations and Privacy Concerns

However, Comcast is among the first to implement this technology widely across millions of routers already installed in American homes. There are some technical limitations to consider. WiFi Motion cannot pinpoint the exact location of detected movement; it can only identify which device has detected it. The system also struggles to differentiate between large pets and small children, although it is sensitive enough to detect small pets and even a wave of a hand.

It is important to note that smartphones and tablets cannot be used as devices to receive signals for motion detection; only static devices like printers, game consoles, or smart home devices can participate in this feature. Additionally, Comcast's official documentation includes a clause stating that the company may disclose information generated by WiFi Motion to third parties without further notice to users. This may occur in connection with investigations or legal proceedings involving law enforcement, disputes involving Comcast, or by court order.
