In a remarkable turn of events, a developer named Gathin has found a unique solution to the annoyance of excessive ads on his parents' Xiaomi smart TV. Utilizing the power of artificial intelligence (AI), specifically Claude Code, Gathin successfully transformed the TV's interface to mirror that of an Apple TV.

The Frustration with Advertisements

Gathin's frustration stemmed from the fact that his parents were subjected to a barrage of advertisements before they could even access their favorite streaming service, Netflix. Rather than seeking out alternative applications to replace the existing setup, he opted to leverage AI to create a personalized solution.

Using AI for Modification

The innovative process began when Gathin provided Claude Code with the model number of the Xiaomi TV. This AI tool, developed by Anthropic, aided him in connecting his computer to the television via Wi-Fi utilizing the Android Debug Bridge (ADB).

ADB is a developer tool that allows users to manage Android devices through specific commands from a computer. Through this connection, Claude Code facilitated the identification and deactivation of 25 Xiaomi software packages, including those responsible for ads and analytics.

Creating a New User Interface

Following this, Gathin instructed the AI to develop a new launcher, which serves as the main interface when operating the TV. The result was a sleek, minimalist design reminiscent of Apple TV, featuring a dark background, large clock display, and easily accessible favorite apps via the remote.

With this new setup, users can directly access their desired applications without having to wade through various content recommendations and promotions that clutter the original Xiaomi interface.

Open Source and Compatibility

Despite the transformation, the TV continues to operate on the Android TV system; only the interface and certain built-in services have changed, rather than converting it into an Apple device running tvOS.

Eager to share his findings, Gathin made his project available for free on GitHub under the name 'tv-vibehack'. This open-source project includes source code, installation instructions, and scripts for restoring the previous settings.

The launcher is lightweight enough to work on Android TVs with just 1 GB of RAM. This modification process does not require root access or specialized firmware installation.

According to the GitHub documentation, the project is compatible with various Android TV and Google TV devices, including models from Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, and Hisense. However, compatibility may vary depending on the specific model and software version.

Moreover, the changes can be reverted if needed. Nonetheless, users are advised to exercise caution, as disabling the wrong system applications could disrupt the TV's functionality.
