Discovering Apple TV: A Surprising Netflix Replacement

For a considerable time, I felt stuck in a streaming rut. After canceling my Netflix subscription last year due to growing disappointment, finding a viable alternative proved to be quite the challenge. I tried various platforms, but none managed to capture my interest or deliver the value I expected. Surprisingly, Apple TV emerged as my unexpected streaming choice.

From Netflix Loyalty to Apple TV Curiosity

As a long-time Netflix user, I relished the vast array of movies and TV shows available. However, Apple TV's limited offerings did little to entice me, despite hearing praise for shows like Ted Lasso and Severance. The pricing also made me hesitant; in 2023, Apple TV (previously known as Apple TV+) was the priciest streaming service in my area.

The Cost and Availability Dilemma

Not being an Apple device owner left me without perks like a complimentary three-month subscription, and I couldn’t take advantage of Family Sharing. This made the decision to subscribe to Apple TV even more challenging, especially when considering alternatives like Prime Video, Disney+, or local streaming options like Showmax. Previously, I had only experimented with Apple TV during a free trial, but the limited content made it hard to justify a full subscription.

Changing Streaming Landscape

While Netflix still reigns as a leading platform, many subscribers, including myself, feel that its golden days are behind it. Price hikes and restrictions on password sharing have altered the streaming landscape significantly. Viewers have also witnessed an increasing number of cancellations of beloved series to cut costs, alongside a rise in low-budget content, such as reality shows. My frustration mounted as I watched series I enjoyed get canceled, and new seasons were often staggered to keep users subscribed longer.

Why Apple TV Became My Choice

Amidst this discontent with Netflix, I found myself watching more TV, especially since my gaming hobby became less feasible due to chronic pain. I explored Prime Video, which was the most affordable option, but many shows left me feeling indifferent. I realized I was seeking high-quality, immersive series—content that usually aligns with HBO’s reputation. However, local access to HBO content had disappeared, and Disney+ had raised its prices. This prompted me to reconsider Apple TV as my primary streaming option.

Eventually, the allure of rich sci-fi programming and Apple TV's expanding library led me to subscribe. When comparing prices, Apple TV's monthly fee of R124.99 (approximately $7.70) began to seem reasonable, especially against Netflix’s R179 (around $11) for its Standard plan and Disney+ at the same price point. With limited options available to me, Apple TV started to shine as a feasible choice.

Despite some disappointments, such as the show Invasion, I found that Apple TV’s content generally delivered more satisfaction than what I experienced on Netflix or Prime Video. The platform boasts excellent shows like Silo, Foundation, and Murderbot, and even a spontaneous watch of Widow’s Bay pleasantly surprised me with its unique take on horror. For the first time in ages, I felt content with my streaming service choice.

In conclusion, if you appreciate in-depth sci-fi content, Apple TV is worth considering. However, potential subscribers should keep in mind that those who recently joined may encounter limited new content. Additionally, if you’re in a region with a wider variety of streaming options, the value of Apple TV might not be as compelling.
