Dream's investigation uncovered a 160 MB online archive containing 1,395 files that highlighted the involvement of two open-source AI agents, Hermes and OpenClaw.

The operational methodology of the autonomous AI involved several steps. Initially, the AI agents were tasked with identifying potential targets and discovering system vulnerabilities. They then attempted to gain unauthorized access while continuously seeking alternative methods if their initial attempts failed. Over time, the number of AI agents involved in the attack grew, enabling them to collaborate and expedite the hacking process.

Interestingly, the perpetrators behind this operation reportedly disguised their activities as security testing to prevent the AI from rejecting the assignments. Despite the sophisticated capabilities of the AI, the attack did not exploit any new or unknown vulnerabilities, commonly referred to as zero-day vulnerabilities. Instead, the AI was utilized to identify existing weaknesses in the system.
